*Please remember: You need a passport, it is the British Virgin Islands!
When traveling to the BVI, there are no direct flights from the USA, Canada, Europe, or South America to the British Virgin Islands' main airport, the Terrence B. Lettsome Airport (EIS). The BVI’s additional major airports are and Taddy Bay Airport, Virgin Gorda (VIJ) and Auguste George Airport, Anegada (NGD).
*All flights connect through another Caribbean airports like Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, Antigua, or St. Maarten.
*Taxes / Departure Tax: There's a new $10/pp environmental tax that started a few days before the storm. If you're coming by ferry that's the only new one. There's a couple extra $ for cruising permit for ferries and private boats.
The airport departure tax is $50 pp in Beef Island and $35 pp in Virgin Gorda – payable in USD at the airport. Environmental Levy: $10 per person payable in USD at the port of entry upon arrival
Latest news! VIRGIN GORDA AIRPORT is open!
* If you are flying from United States on a major airline you will need to book to:
(SJU) San Juan, Puerto Rico - Here you will need to take a separate flight to VG, Taddy Bay Airport (VIJ).
(EIS) Beef Island, Tortola - Here you will need to take a Ferry from Beef Island to Virgin Gorda with Speedy's. Check the ferry schedules with Speedy's and make sure you fly early because you don't want to be stranded on Beef Island. If you are staying in Spanish Town, Mahoe Bay, Nail Bay, The Baths, Guavaberry Spring, the Speedy's ferry will take you to Spanish Town. Go to the Speedy's office in the airport, they have a courtesy shuttle, they will drive you to Speedy's dock. You can pay the ticket ferries on the ferry (remember cash only). I recommend you to write an email to email@example.com and tell them when you land, how many people you are and that you need the courtesy shuttle and to be guided to the dock. It is a 5 minutes walk but I am sure you don't want to walk under the Sun! Buy a round trip ticket, it is cheaper. You don't need a date, just the ticket! Bring your Round Trip ticket to Speedy's and receive a $5 off with Speedy's Jeep Rentals! You need a car in VG so it is better if you land early during the day.
(STT) US Virgin Island St. Thomas and take a one-hour ferry ride to Road Town Harbour or a direct ferry to Virgin Gorda (but it's not everyday). The ferry depot is a short 10-minute taxi ride from the airport (you have taxis waiting) and the ferries run frequently, so no need to book in advance. To avoid a BVI Turnover Saturday travel experience plan to arrive at the airport more than three hours before your scheduled departure time. This may seem extreme, but it's not. If you're taking the one-hour "fast" ferry back to St. Thomas, make sure to give yourself plenty of time to account for delays that can last several hours. Then take a quick taxi to the airport. Even if you arrive 59 minutes before your flight, you will be told you're too late, and they'll give up your seat.
FERRY TO VIRGIN GORDA
If you are traveling on to Virgin Gorda (VIJ) your hotel, resort, or villa will guide you to make sure that charter flights or ferry service will be available if you arrive after 4pm. It's very important to check the ferry schedule although you can always book a private ride with Speedy's. Otherwise, plan to spend a night in Tortola before arriving Virgin Gorda. Boat charters can be arranged via St. Thomas, Road Town or Beef Island.
